Everything you need to know before buying gold
Gold is one of the safest ways to save in the Arab region, but buying smart means knowing a few basics. This guide explains everything simply.
Karat measures purity. 24K is pure gold (99.9%) — most expensive but soft. 21K is the most popular in Egypt and the Gulf for jewelry (87.5% gold). 18K (75%) is stronger, used in accessories and diamond settings. 14K (58.5%) is cheaper and more durable.
The local price = the global ounce price in USD ÷ 31.1 grams × the local dollar exchange rate. So any move in the dollar or the global market affects your price instantly.
The making charge is the labor cost of turning bullion into jewelry, charged per gram and varying by shop and item. You pay gold price + making when buying, and usually only the gold price when selling.
Jewelry carries a high making charge you lose on resale. Bullion and coins have far lower making, making them best for investment. See our Bullion page for company prices.
There's no guaranteed perfect moment, but following the trend helps. Watch gold prices and history, and consider buying gradually rather than a lump sum to smooth out volatility.
If you own 85 grams of gold or more (the nisab) for a year, zakat is 2.5% of its value. Use our zakat calculator.
The gold gram price is nearly fixed, but the making charge and margin differ. Always compare the full buy price (gold + making), not just the gram price.
