Silver continues to draw interest in Egypt as a savings and investment option alongside gold, particularly for buyers who want a precious metal at a reachable price.
Fine silver (999) was quoted at about 81.77 pounds a gram today, with sterling silver (925) near 75.63 pounds. An ounce came in around 2,543 pounds.
In larger units, 100 grams of fine silver works out at roughly 8,177 pounds, and a full kilogram at about 81,766 pounds — the weights favoured by anyone treating silver as a long-term store of value.
One figure investors watch is the gold-to-silver ratio, currently around 85. It says an ounce of gold is worth roughly 85 ounces of silver, and some use it to judge which of the two looks better value.
Roughly half of silver demand is industrial rather than investment, which ties its movement to the health of the economy and to manufacturing output more closely than gold's.
Silver tarnishes in humid air and loses its shine over time, so it is best kept in sealed bags or airtight boxes — particularly bars and investment pieces.
Specialists track silver inventories on the global exchanges as a gauge of supply and demand. Falling stocks alongside strong industrial demand tend to support the price, and the reverse holds too.
